About the Grant

The overall goal of the Programme is to support Belarusian independent journalism and media arts initiatives and facilitate the production of high-quality, trustworthy, and diverse content for Belarusian people on the developments in the country. The programme would promote the provision of independent and objective information to the people of Belarus. The grant is funded by Nordic Council of Ministers, Norwegian Embassy in Lithuania, which is side accredited to the Republic of Belarus. The grant is administrated by Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania.

The objectives of the Program:

  • To support Belarusian independent media outlets, journalists, and media arts through provision of grants.

  • To support capacity building of the media players and media artists.

  • To contribute to the provision of trustful information to Belarusian society.

  • To support Belarusian culture related to the media arts.

Eligible applicants and activities

Application can be submitted by:

  • Belarusian independent media outlets.

  • Belarusian journalists.

  • Belarusian creators of visual / artistic / interdisciplinary media content.

  • Non-Belarusian media outlets, which employ or contract Belarusian journalists, and have clear focus on Belarus.

History of the Programme

In the first round of the Nordic Media Grants Programme for Belarus (2021–2022), 15 of the 41 applications submitted by independent Belarusian media outlets, journalists, and media artists based in Belarus and abroad were awarded grants, with a total funding amount of EUR 211,000.

In the second round (2022–2023), 15 of 56 applications received funding, with a total grant amount of EUR 255,000.

In the third round (2024–2025), 17 of 155 applications were approved for funding, with a total grant amount of EUR 355,600.

In the fourth round (2025–2026), 26 of 85 applications were funded, with a total grant amount of EUR 578,640.

3rd call was followed by the capacity building training program for independent Belarusian media, organized by Fojo Media Institute (SE) together with Nordic Journalist Centre (DK), Institute of Journalism in Norway and Belarusian partners. Trainings on Modern Journalism Formats, Solution-oriented journalism and Planning and managing journalism projects were carried out.

The first call was funded by Nordic Council of Ministers, Norwegian Embassy in Lithuania, which is side accredited to the Republic of Belarus, and the Swedish Institute. The second, third and fourth call was funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Norwegian Embassy in Lithuania.

The programme is administrated by Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania.
